Saint-Georges Symphony 1

The Chevalier de Saint-Georges is one of the 18th Century's most under appreciated talents. Born in the French territory of Guadeloupe as Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier was the son of wealthy planter George Bologne and his wife's African slave, Anne.

Determined to have Joseph raised to be a gentleman, George took his son to Paris where he was formally educated. During his lifetime, Joseph became a champion fencer, a violin virtuoso, the conductor of the leading orchestra in Paris, a colonel in the first all-black regiment in Europe, and the first classical composer of African ancestry.

Among his many orchestral and chamber works, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges composed two symphonies. Symphony 1 is a three movement work in the bright uplifting key of G Major and represents the very best in 18th Century French symphonic writing.
