Haydn had two residencies in the city of London during the 1790s where he composed and premiered his final twelve symphonies (numbers 93-104), which are collectively known as his "London" Symphonies.
Haydn made a massive impact on the English music scene and his twelve symphonies composed for the English are considered to be the pinnacle of Classical Period symphonic writing.

Symphony 99 was the first symphony performed during Haydn's second residence in London. It is possibly Haydn's most overlooked symphony as it is overshadowed by the subsequent five symphonies in Haydn's second set of six. This is not reflected in the quality of the work, however, as it is just as perfectly composed as any of the twelve.
