Mozart composed his Symphony 35 in 1782 as a commission for the Haffner family, and is therefore commonly known as the "Haffner" Symphony.
The Haffner family was one of the most prominent in Salzburg and commissioned the work in celebration of Sigmund Haffner's promotion to the nobility. The symphony's premiere in Vienna was a big success for Mozart and was the first of the six symphonies that he would compose upon moving permanently to Vienna.
