Beethoven's Piano Concerto 1 was composed in 1795 and revised in 1800. The earliest known performance was in 1798 in Prague. The concerto was performed in 1800 at the Bergtheater in Vienna for Beethoven's first "Akademie" (benefit concert). This concert also included the premiere of Beethoven's Symphony 1.

Even though this composition is listed as number 1, it was in fact composed after to the piano concerto now labeled as number 2. The reverse numbering reflects the order in which the concertos were published as opposed to when they were composed.
