Haydn Symphony 94

In 1790, Haydn made his first of two visits to London where he composed, among other works, six symphonies (numbers 93-98).  So successful was his London residency that he was invited back in 1794 where he composed six more symphonies (numbers 99-104) for another triumphal series of public concerts for the English.

The most popular symphony from the first residency is Symphony 94 (nicknamed "Surprise" for the sudden loud note near the beginning of the second movement).

Like all 12 of the "London Symphonies", Symphony 94 contains a perfect balance of formal structure, elegance, and humor.
