In 1777, Mozart composed his oboe concerto for the newly appointed oboist at the Court Chapel of Salzburg, the Italian Giuseppe Ferlendis. The following year, Mozart transcribed the work (originally in C Major) to a D Major flute concerto.
Until the 20th century, the flute transcription was thought to have been the original and the oboe version the later work. The discovery of a set of parts to the oboe concerto however, dated before the flute version, has led scholars to accept the oboe concerto as the original work.
MOZART IN 1777 |
Mozart's Oboe Concerto is in the bright, sunny key of C Major and is cheerful throughout all three movements. It remains a staple of the standard solo repertoire for oboists to this day.
