Le Nozze Di Figaro

Le Nozze Di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) is arguably the greatest opera ever composed. Astonishingly, the bulk of the opera was written by Mozart in just six weeks.

FIGARO AND ANTONIO

Le Nozze Di Figaro was the first of three collaborations between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte.

The play upon which Mozart's opera is based was banned in Vienna because of the portrayal of the aristocracy as corrupt, immoral, and unintelligent. Mozart and da Ponte had to persuade Emperor Joseph II that the more dangerous political messages had been removed from the plot before the opera was allowed to be performed.

Despite the edits, Mozart was able to express the political ideals of the Enlightenment with just his music. With the French Revolution just a few years away, the success of Le Nozze Di Figaro with the middle class (and the tepid response by the aristocracy) was a glimpse into the political and social changes that would soon impact all of Europe.

In the attached walkthrough below, the scenes are described in black text, analysis of key points are in blue text, and optional arias are in red text.
