Haydn Symphony 82

During the 1780s, one of the greatest orchestras in Europe was the Concert de la Loge Olympique located in Paris, France. Although Haydn never visited Paris during his lifetime, his music was extremely popular with the Parisians.

CHEVALIER DE SAINT-GEORGES

So when Haydn was commissioned to compose six symphonies by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the conductor of the Concert de la Loge Olympique, Haydn created six of his greatest symphonic works.

The six Paris Symphonies (82-87) were a massive success with the Parisians and were quickly circulated throughout Europe.

Symphony 82 is nicknamed "The Bear" because of the rustic theme in the last movement which some listeners say resembles a dancing bear.
