Mozart's 36th Symphony is known as the "Linz" Symphony as he composed it while staying in the Austrian town of the same name while traveling from Salzburg to Vienna in 1783. Not having brought a piece to perform at the local count's court, Mozart composed the "Linz" Symphony from start to finish in under four days.
MOZART'S RESIDENCE WHILE IN LINZ |
The "Linz" Symphony remains one of Mozart's most performed compositions and is filled with energy throughout each of the work's four movements. It is one of Mozart's only symphonies to contain a slow introduction, perhaps written to honor the local count with an appropriately aristocratic flavor.
The highest praise should be given to the 4th movement finale which is filled with musically sophisticated passages that are celebratory, fun, and immediately accessible.
