Die Zauberflote

Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) is one of Mozart's best and most loved operas. It was composed and premiered in 1791, Mozart's final year, and elevated the genre of German Singspiel to the same level as Italian Opera.

The main difference between German Singspiel and Italian Opera (other than the language) is that a Singspiel uses spoken dialogue between arias instead of the more formal recitatives of half-spoken, half-sung text.

Die Zauberflote was premiered in Vienna and was an immediate success. In the years after Mozart's death, the singspeil's popularity spread throughout Europe. Today, Die Zauberflote is one of the most performed operas in the world.
