Fidelio

Fidelio was Beethoven's only opera, and it actually went through three different rewrites, having premieres in 1805, 1806, and 1814. The first two versions were titled "Leonore" and were premiered at the Theatre an der Vien in Vienna. These versions met with mild response.

In 1814, the final version (renamed "Fidelio") premiered at the Theater am Karntnertor in Vienna. This revised version was a massive success and vaulted Beethoven to a level of fame amongst the Viennese that he had not seen before.

THEATER AM KARNTNERTOR

The Theater am Karntnertor was demolished in 1870 to build apartments which eventually became the famous Hotel Sacher that remains today.
