Mozart had traveled to Munich several times as a child and young adult. His visit in 1781 resulted in the premiere of Idomeneo which was to become Mozart's greatest opera seria (serious opera).

Idomeneo was performed at the royal palace known as the Residenz in the beautiful Cuvillies Theatre.
Severely damaged during the Second World War, both the restored Residenz Palace and the Cuvillies Theatre are open to the public today.
