Beethoven Symphony 8

Beethoven's Symphony 8 was premiered in 1814 in the Redoutensaal Theatre at the Hofburg Palace in Vienna two months after the premiere of the Symphony 7 (which was also performed at the premiere of the 8th). At the time of the concert, Beethoven was at the height of his popularity with the Viennese general public due to the success of the Symphony 7 and the novelty composition Wellington's Victory celebrating the downfall of Napoleon.

The 8th symphony of Beethoven is often referred to by the nickname "Short" due to its shorter length and lighter style than his previous symphonic works. On the surface, the symphony would seem to be a throwback to the classical style of Haydn, but the work contains many subtle innovations characteristic of Beethoven including unusual modulations, an abundance of dynamic contrast, and unexpected liberties with form.
