Mozart's Horn Concerto 4 was composed in 1786 while Mozart was living in Vienna. All four horn concerti were written for the very talented Viennese hornist, Joseph Leutgeb.

Despite the number 4, this horn concerto was the second that Mozart composed. The confusion comes from dating the concerti more accurately after they had already been numbered. The chronological order is as follows:

Horn Concerto 2 (1783)
Horn Concerto 4 (1786)
Horn Concerto 3 (1787)
Horn Concerto 1 (1791)
