Haydn Symphony 73

Haydn spent the majority of his career working for Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy. Symphonies 6 - 81 were composed for performance at the Esterhazy court. During the 1780s, Haydn's compositional style matured to an entire new level where he achieved the perfect balance between technical complexity, artistic content, and popular appeal.

HAYDN IN THE 1780s

Composed in 1782, Haydn's Symphony 73 is one of the first examples of this refined approach to orchestral writing. The nickname "La chasse" (the hunt) was given to the work because of the hunting horn calls in the final movement.
