The Barber of Seville

The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini was first premiered in 1816 at Rome's Teatro Argentina. Widely considered to be the greatest Bel Canto Opera Buffa ever composed, The Barber of Seville takes its plot from French writer Pierre Beaumarchais's play of the same name. The Barber of Seville is the first in a trilogy of plays by Beaumarchais, the others being The Marriage of Figaro,  and The Guilty Mother.
