Haydn Symphony 86

Haydn's Symphony 86 is one of the six symphonies composed during the 1780s for the city of Paris. Although Haydn never visited France, his music was extremely popular with the French. Contemporary accounts of the Parisian concerts show that the six symphonies were played almost non-stop for weeks.

The orchestra for which Haydn composed these works was the largest ensemble for which he had ever written up to that time, and was twice the size of his own orchestra at the Esterhazy Palace.

Haydn's Symphony 86 was one of two "Paris" Symphonies in which Haydn included trumpets and timpani, giving the composition a celebratory character.
