Haydn Cello Concerto 1

Haydn composed two concerti for cello. The first was completed in 1765 when Haydn was in the early years of his career with Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy. Composed for Joseph Franz Weigl, the principal cellist of the Esterhazy Orchestra, the concerto was thought lost until it's rediscovery in 1961 within the Prague National Museum. The concerto has been one of the most performed works for cello ever since.

All three movements of the concerto are in an early version of sonata form. As the form was still being developed, the movements also display elements of the Baroque Era Ritornello Form.
