Haydn Horn Concerto 1

Haydn spent most of his career working as Kapellmeister for Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy. Haydn's Horn Concerto 1 was composed soon after his appointment to the Esterhazy court and was most likely composed for the hornist Thaddaus Steinmuller, who was one of the first musicians hired by Haydn after taking the appointment.

THE ESTERHAZY PALACE

As Haydn's Horn Concerto 1 is an early work in his career, the piece shares some characteristics of the Baroque era that preceded the Classical era. The ritornello-like structure of the first movement and walking bass in the second movement are both holdovers from the Baroque style.
