Mozart Horn Concerto 2

Although numbered as the 2nd horn concerto, Mozart's Horn Concerto 2 was actually the first he composed. All four horn concerti were written during his Vienna years for the very talented Viennese hornist, Joseph Leutgeb.

Fox hunting was a favorite pastime during the 18th Century, and the valveless "natural" horn used in the orchestras of the Classical Period developed from the hunting horns of the time. As a result, all four of Mozart's horn concerti have a 3rd movement Rondo in the style of an outdoor hunt.

Mozart composed the Horn Concerto 2 in 1783 and inscribed the following playful gibe on the manuscript:

"Mozart took pity on Leutgeb, ass, ox, and fool in Vienna on 27 May, 1783"
