Egmont Overture

In 1810, Beethoven composed incidental music for a 1787 play by Goethe called Egmont. The play tells the story of the 16th century nobleman, Lamoral, Count of Egmont.

The Egmont Overture is one of the most frequently performed concert overtures (an overture performed as a stand alone concert work). It follows the standard sonata form structure and is one of the last pieces written during Beethoven's middle (or heroic) compositional period.
