In 1772, Haydn composed six string quartets published as Opus 20. These six quartets were groundbreaking in that they established for all time the standard template for the string quartet. Four movement structure, equal distribution of material, use of counterpoint, and depth of expression are just some examples of Haydn's innovations upon which future generations would build.
