Mozart composed many serenades to be performed by small chamber groups at special events. The works were written to be occasional music and would be light in mood.
Mozart's most famous serenade is also one of the most recognizable classical works of all time. The Serenade 13, more commonly known by the subtitle "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" is in four short movements and was written in 1787 when Mozart was at the height of his compositional powers.
Often translated as "A Little Night Music", the correct interpretation of the phrase implies a short serenade as opposed to a little bit of music performed at night.
