In 1781, Haydn composed six string quartets published as his Opus 33. Instantly popular with the general public, the Opus 33 quartets inspired Mozart to compose six strings quartets of his own which he then dedicated to his friend Haydn.
Known as Mozart's "Haydn" Quartets, the set was composed over several years at a slower pace than Mozart's usual compositional speed so as to create quartets of the highest quality.
