Louvre Museum

The Louvre was originally a castle fortress that protected medieval Paris. In 1546, King Francois I converted the castle to the primary residence of the French monarch.

In 1682, Louis XIV established the Palace of Versailles as the new royal residence and the Louvre became responsible for housing and displaying the royal collection.

After the monarchy was overthrown during the French Revolution, the Louvre was converted to a public museum.
