Old University

Vienna's Alte Universitat (Old University) is a collection of buildings in the 1st District mostly dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. The auditorium was the site of two very significant events in the lives of Beethoven and Haydn.

In 1813, a public charity concert was held to benefit soldiers wounded in the Napoleonic Wars. At the event Beethoven premiered his Symphony 7 and a novelty work entitled Wellington's Victory which depicted the Duke of Wellington's victory over Napoleon.

The concert was a massive success for Beethoven, who conducted the symphony himself despite his hearing difficulties. The second movement of Symphony 7 was immediately encored and became one of Beethoven's most loved works.

Haydn was seated next to Princess Esterhazy who, when she saw Haydn shiver during the performance, placed her shawl around Haydn's shoulders. Several aristocratic ladies seated nearby did the same.

The French ambassador to Vienna saw Haydn wearing a gold medal presented to him by the Concert des Amateurs in Paris. The ambassador told Haydn: "This medal is not enough! You should receive all the medals distributed in the whole of France."
