The Theatre an der Wien was built in 1801 by theatre impresario Emanuel Schikaneder. Schikaneder is most famously known as Mozart's librettist for Die Zauberflote, Mozart's final opera. Schikaneder also played the role of Papageno in the premiere of Die Zauberflote.
The Papageno Gate above the entrance depicts the bird catcher Papageno and the three young boys from Die Zauberflote.

Next to the entrance is a memorial to Beethoven who lived at the theatre in 1803 and 1804 while composing his only opera Fidelio. Beethoven premiered many of his most famous works at the Theatre an der Wien including:
